Why a representation toolkit?
CPA Approach
Children learn best when they can move between concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations simultaneously — not sequentially. This toolkit puts pictorial tools within reach.
Representation & Structure
Purposefully chosen representations expose mathematical structure. When children choose their own tool, they develop agency and deeper understanding.
Scaffolding That Fades
The EEF recommends representations as scaffolds to be gradually removed. A desk toolkit lets children self-regulate — reaching for help when they need it, not when they don't.
Informed by the NCETM Five Big Ideas for Teaching for Mastery, the EEF Improving Mathematics guidance, and the Ofsted Mathematics Research Review (2021).
